Distinguished Alumni

Our fraternity has many distinguished alumni to be proud of. Brothers from Colorado State have achieved tremendous success in a variety of fields and shown incredible committment to Colorado Gamma and Sigma Phi Epsilon. It is incredible to see not only the breadth, but the heights of accomplishments by just a small sample of brothers from the Colorado State University SigEp chapter.

Jim Benemann (1978)


Held the lead anchor position for two network television stations in Denver, and currently delivers the news on CBS 4 Denver.

Walter "Bus" Bergman (1942)


Bus Bergen was a decorated Colorado Athelete, Coach, and WWII War Hero.

Bus hit the winning shot for Denver's North High School in 1938 that gave them the State High School Championship while earning letters in Basketball, Football, and Baseball. After a standout college football career for the Colorado A&M Aggies as halfback, Bus turned down an offer from the Philadephia Eagles instead to enlist in the Marines where he achieved the rank of Major and earned a Bronze Star for heroism during the battles of Okinawa and Sugar Loaf Hill.

Bus had an incredible tenure at Mesa State as a Coach from 1950 to 1980. He is a member of six athletic hall of fames, including the Colorado State University Hall of Fame (1993) and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame (1995).

Colorado Gamma and SigEp lost an incredible brother on Sunday, March 28th, 2010 when Bus passed away. (Denver Post)

Leonard Blach (1959)


Co-owner the 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird.

Dale Dodrill (1951)


Distinguished football career with the Colorado A&M Aggies and Pittsburgh Steelers. Dale received recognition as a 2-time all Skyline Conference on offense and defense and served as team captain in 1950 for the Aggies and was a four-time AFL All Pro linebacker during his 9 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After retiring from the field, Dale served as an assistant coach with the Denver Broncos and was elected to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

Jasper French (1939)


Jasper (Jap) French is one of three Sigma Phi Epsilon Citation (1973) winners from Colorado Gamma. Jap was recognized for building the CSU Alumni Association from 5,000 member to more than 30,000+ members during his tenure. He also played a instrumental role in the construction of Hughes Stadium and Moby Arena while serving CSU.

Albert Hornung (1961)


Al served the Chapter on the Alumni Board for more than a decade and was recognized by Sigma Phi Epsilon as one of only three Colorado Gamma Distinguished Alumni.

Paul Jennings (1958)


Paul is one of three Sigma Phi Epsilon Citation (1993) winners from Colorado Gamma.

Harold B. Joy (1917)


Hal Joy was a charter member of the Colorado Gamma Chapter of Sig Phi Epsilon. After graudating from C.A.C. and completing a tour in the Army, Hal began his career as a draftsman for Temple Buell. Hal worked for Temple until the beginning of the Depression.

Archie Lind (1964)


Currently serving as the Vice President of Aviation Systems for the world's largest engineering firm, URS Corporation. Archie also served the Chapter as the Alumni Board Treasurer from the early 1990s through 2004 and is one of only three Colorado Gamma alumni recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by Sigma Phi Epsilon Headquarters (1999) for his dedication and committment to Co Gamma and SigEp.

Kenneth Monfort (1951)


Has had one of the largest impacts on CSU with the Monfort Excellence Fund. He also created significant innovations in the beef and cattle industry, like cutting up meat at the plant before shipping, as he grew Monfort Beef of Colorado into a leading national beef producer. Kenneth Monfort was recognized in 1973 with the Sigma Phi Epsilon Citation. Read a detailed history on Monfort, Inc. at Answers.com.

Joseph Phelps (1951)


Founded and operated his Napa Valley vineyard (Joseph Phelps Vineyard) that produced the Wine Spectator 2005 Wine of the Year: Joseph Phelps Insignia (article).

Roy Romer (1950)


Served as Governor of Colorado from 1987 to 1999 and later the Superintendent of the Los Angeles County School District from 2001 to 2006.

Garry Saylor (1958)


Garry Saylor demonstrated the essence of Co Gamma and SigEp each and every day. His dedication to Colorado Gamma led him to drive 3 hours each way while serving as the Alumni Board President through 1992. Garry is desperately missed by all of his brothers.

Walter Scott (1953)


Developed regional construction company Kiewit into one of the largest and most respected construction and mining companies in North America. As Chief Executive, Walter took Kiewit into fiber optics and he is recognized on the Forbes 500 list.

Dr. John Weihing (1942)


Dr. Weighing was a leading plant pathologist and public television personality in Nebraska and National Public Television. Dr. Weighing developed a New Land Grant University, among his many personal and professional accomplishments.
