The Twin Cities-Minneapolis and St. Paul-are the cultural and economic center of the 13 county metropolitan statistical area of Minnapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington. Locals refer to "The Cities" more often than the "Twin Cities." Bloomington now rivals Deluth and Rochester as the third largest city in Minnesota, after Minneapolis and St. Paul, and is home to the Mall of America.
The Mall of America was the second largest in total square footage at 4.2 million square feet and the largest in terms of the number of vendors when it opened in 1992. It has since been surpassed by a handful of mega-malls throughout throughout the world.
