Memphis is named after the ancient capital of Lower Egypt. Symbols of Egypt can also be seen with the pyramid arena. Pyramid arena seats 21,000, built in 1991, is located on the banks of the Mississippi and jointly owned by the City of Memphis and Shelby County.

The Pyramid was home to the University of Memphis basketball team and the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies until the FedEx Forum was completed in 2004. The Pyramid Arena in Memphis is the third largest pyramid in the world, after the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas.
