Washington D.C. is coterminous with the District of Columbia. The city was developed at the end of the 18th century to serve as the nation's capital. The district borders Virginia and Maryland, the states who surrendered the land that makes up the district.

The District was created to maintain separation between the Nation's Capital and any single state. Of the land surrendered by Maryland and Virginia for the District, 39 square miles were returned to the State of Virginia in 1847.

The land returned to Virginia was incorporated into Arlington County. The District and city of Washington D.C. currently occupies 63 square miles.
