Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina, with a population of more than 600,000. The city was named in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenberg, the wife of King George III. Prior to the American Revolution, General Cornwalis wrote than Charlotte was a hornet's nest of rebellion which inspired one of the city's nicknames: "The Hornet's Nest." Charlotte's original NBA basketball team, awarded in the 1987 NBA expansion, played on this nickname as the Charlotte Hornets. As the team moved to New Orleans in 2002, due in no small part to team owner George Shinn's actions, the Hornets NBA moniker left the city of Charlotte. In November of 2004, Charlotte's new NBA team, the Bobcats played their first game and brought professional basketball back to the city.
