Built in 1870, the Victorian Gothic structure actually served as a sheepfold until 1934.
Parks Commissioner Robert Moses wanted to see the building converted into a restaurant at that time and sent the sheep Prospect Park in Brooklyn. On October 20th, 1934, the opening ceremony of Tavern on the Green was hosted by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia with Moses in attendance. Tavern on the Green has endured many reincarnations over the years and continues to delight Central Park visitors and diners to this day.
Another classic restaurant near Central Park is Il Vagabondo at 351 E. 62nd. This quaint little italian place is tucked away in a basement between 1st and 2nd Avenues on the east side. Il Vagabondo is famous for their on-site bocce ball court where patrons can play a game of bocce while waiting for an available table.
