A Yorkville Tale

Welcome to Yorkville on W303. I currently live in the Yorkville neighborhood of New York City and this blog is more of a travel or photo journal than it is a collection of cogent thoughts. But who knows, maybe there are a couple of insightful points buried somewhere in here.

For the last couple of years I have lived in New York City, but you will find photos and information about things I've seen or done before I lived in NYC as well as the places I've visited. You'll mostly find entries about New York, Colorado, California, Texas, and Florida- as I have lived in all of these states (and more) and I also find myself traveling to these states more often than others.

You can add comments to any of my entries and I hope you will. Regardless, thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy the photos and stories...

No manufacturer can make a system proof against human corruption. Some human being can somehow get at everything stored in any system, however ingenious. Therefore a heavy responsibility falls foursquare upon us every one of us as citizens [and colleagues] to do this:

Estes Park, Bob and Tonys, and A New Camera Oct 17, 2009

My Nikon S220 wasn't measuring up to expectations so I checked some rankings and read up on the best point and click cameras. Canon seemed to be the best brand in this market segment with lots of positive reviews so I bought a Canon SD780 IS before heading up to Estes Park.

The Canon seems great so far, great image quality and a very small size, and I bought a nice small protective case so it won't take a beating with my travels.

Estes was great and the weather was fantastic- sunny and almost 70 degrees. We took Highway 7 up instead of the more common Highway 36 and I enjoyed that much more. There were far fewer cars on the road and the scenery was a little less inhibited by roadside buildings and development.

We got a pizza from Bob and Tony's, apparently an Estes Park icon, and it was a really great pie. Being a New Yorker, you won't hear me say that about pizza in Colorado very often, but Bob and Tony's does it right!

The Chicken or The Pig? Oct 15, 2009

A colleague on my current project, whom I have already developed great respect for, interrupted our work-related conversation today and said he'd like to tell me a story from his church last weekend.

He explained that the Senior Adult Pastor who does not normally handle the sermon gave the sermon in the absence of the head pastor. The Senior pastor got up and told some hilarious stories about a recent visit to the Cracker Barrell, all the while building up to the great breakfast he was going to eat.

He was very excited about the feast he was going to enjoy and he said the plate arrived with everything he ordered: eggs, hash browns, toast, pancakes, ham.

As he looked at his breakfast with great anticipation, he thought about the roles involved in bringing this breakfast to him and he said while the Chicken was involved, the Pig was really committed. The Pastor then asked for everyone in the congregation to be Pigs and not Chickens when it comes to their faith and church community.

The Two Greatest Yankees Sep 9, 2009

It was something special watching Jeter put on a 3-hit performance tonight to tie Lou Gehrig's all-time Yankee hit record of 2,721. To me, these are the two greatest Yankees in the franchise's illustrious history.

Had Gehrig played in the television era, he would be better recognized for his play rather than just his end of career Independence Day speech. The fact that his speech overshadows his play, just goes to show how special his words were.

Nonetheless, Gehrig and Jeter have demonstrated the play and the character that it means to be a a Yankee- and they both did/do it with unbelievable consistency every single day of their careers, on and off the field.

The 2009 Mighty Rams! Sep 6, 2009

Alright, alright- I know, I have been MIA on the great Yorkville Blog. I'll try to do better- I actually have a lot of photos and news to share, its just been a busy time. In the mean time, I will try to share some smaller digestible posts on Yorkville....

The great Rocky Mountain Showdown between CSU and CU was tonight and I knew that it would be tough to find a bar showing the game in NYC. I checked Alumni.Colostate.edu which said that the CSU alums would the getting together at The Ainsworth. I showed up at 7:45 for the 8pm et kickoff and found an empty closed bar.

Through a buddy, I heard that the CU Alum Association was getting together at XII Bar on east 34th Street so I walked over there. I was happy to see the Rams up 17-0 when I arrived and disappointed that I missed it all. I enjoyed the Mighty Rams victory among 200+ CU alum and supporters as I wondered if CSU Alumni would ever find the passion and organization of CU. So it goes though, and as always- GO RAMS!
