Can anyone share some advice on the best setup for internet at Brooks Tower. I am moving in soon and will be working from home.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many choices for Broadband at Brooks Tower. We do not have Comcast available in the building for television nor broadband (the Management Office told me a couple of years ago that Comcast wanted Brooks Tower to pay for new wiring that would be required to make their service available). Since we share our DirecTV dish, DirectWav, which is DirecTV’s broadband service is not feasible. This leaves us with Qwest DSL.
The good news is that the basic Qwest DSL is currently about $36/mo. and would likely meet your needs. I work for one of the large technology corporations and I worked from home at Brooks Tower with the basic DSL connection for a few years with no significant issues.
There are also some nice options/features they have added in recent years. Once upon a time you had to order a landline to have DSL, but this is no longer the case. You can order stand-alone DSL from Qwest now. And while the service didn’t go down often, there used to be no warning from Qwest when they were going to take the service down for planned maintenance. However, the last time they scheduled planned maintenance, I received an automated telephone call letting me know. I appreciated that very much! I did have a Qwest land line though, so the alert may be dependent on that.
Last but not least, if the basic DSL broadband isn’t fast enough for your needs, you can pay more for faster service though it gets expensive fast when you start increasing the upload speeds above the basic specs.
Hope this helps, enjoy your new “office”!
Right now Qwest is offering “DSL for Life” for $26.99. You must make a 2-year commitment, but they guarantee the price won’t go up. I just signed on for it.
i’m using liberty bell telecom (tom martino’s company) I’m enjoying it.
No matter how many years go by, no matter who’s in charge, no matter how many PUC complaints get filed: Qwest is the worst customer service company in this country. Thanks for the head’s up about Liberty Bell, I’ll have to check that out.
