Our Iceberg is Melting by John Kotter

Book summary:

Our Iceberg Is Melting is a simple fable about doing well in an ever-changing world. Based on pioneering work that shows how eight Steps produce needed change in any sort of group. Includes a forward by Spencer Johnson M.D., author of Who Moved My Cheese? where he applauds Professor Kotter and his equally creative coauthor Holger Rathgeber. He says: “Let us see how a group of penguins, in adverse conditions, use the steps, seemingly without knowing it.”

Book Review

This little fable introduces you to a handful of characters that you can immediately relate with. Even though this book was published in 2005 it is a book that is very appropriate for 2009. How do we react in the face of impending doom? Do we ignore the signs? Do we panic? Do we ridicule those that bring news we don’t want to hear? who are the nay Sayers? Who are the brave leaders willing to speak up? How do our leaders guide change in such a way to make everyone feel they can contribute to a better life for all of us? I immediately saw how I could apply the eight step approach to address a business problem. When we look at the recession I hope we have leaders who can apply the lessons in this book. Could President Obama be our Head Penguin?
